Jet Fuel On The Brain

Oct 2, 2008

Jason Jackson (Instructor) took his class out today for some Jet Fuel Fun!  All the students in Jason’s class are still in their initial stages of coursework.  The experience today was a quick introduction to the procedures followed when running turbine engines for testing and troubleshooting.

Please take a look at some of the pictures we snapped (click on the photo below to access the entire online photo album).  And, be sure to take a peek at the video as well!

Sun ‘N Fun

Jun 27, 2008

The AIM Indianapolis Campus was excited to celebrate our second annual Student Appreciation Day & Laugh Olympics this week.

Our students, staff and faculty enjoyed an afternoon together in the summer sun. Among all the games, contests and awarded prizes the most popular event was the hotdog cookout and picnic style lunch. The day was sponsored by dozens of local and national companies. Combining our efforts and their contributions, AIM was able to give away more than 60 different “door prizes” and contest awards. Overall, the day was a huge success!

Throughout the day we took hundreds of pictures and several short video segments.  Click on the photos below to open up the online album of photos.  And, check out our YouTube channel for all of the videos (to be posted soon)!

Pizza Pizza Pizza !!

Jun 10, 2008

The AIM Indianapolis Campus has hosted our 2008 Mentos & Diet Coke Competition!  The day was filled with fizz, foam, and fountains!!

Each class competed to produce the tallest soda fountain using Diet Coke & Mentos candies for fuel.  The individual classes designed, tested and delivered all sorts of nozzles and apparatus for the event.

We are excited to announce that James Jackson’s class on day session won the first round of competitions.  And, Dave Livesay’s & John Rastenburg’s classes tied for winning positions on evenings.  We congratulate them all!!

Now, pictures speak thousands more words than this blog ever could.  And, VIDEO speaks even more!  So, rather than narrating the entire day of events for you … why don’t you take a look for yourself!

Not only do we have the regular round of pictures for you, but the biggest news is that AIM Indy now has our own YouTube Channel !!

Check it all out:

The Hungriest Team Wins

May 14, 2008

The AIM Indianapolis Campus is excited to announce a class competition for our students. We will add a bit of fun and offer a challenging task for our classes with this competition. At the end of this academic module each class will be competing for bragging rights and … a pizza party!!

The challenge is to create a “fountain” by dropping Mentos candies into a bottle of soda. The class with the highest “fountain” will win! The idea was inspired by an episode of the Mythbusters television program on the Discovery Channel. The Mythbusters Episode Guide explains the show:

Episode 57: Mentos and Soda
Adam and Jamie are trying to figure out the theory behind the chaos when diet cola and mentos mix. Inspired by an internet phenomenon, the Mythbusters take on the controversy surrounding these fizzy fountains. Adam and Jamie pit soda against soda and candy against candy to find the perfect cocktail for their explosive exploits.

Mentos & Soda

Following in Adam & Jamie’s footsteps, we will reproduce the “experiment”. Our students will work as classroom sized teams to develop, fabricate and demonstrate their designs for high spraying soda fountains.

The official rules for the competition are posted in every classroom. Here is a copy:

  1. You must use the soda provided by AIM
  2. You must use the Mentos provided by AIM
  3. All construction materials must be appropriated from within the building. Ken Stumpf, Mark Holloway and Milton Maung have “design” approval authority, please refer to them with questions / concerns / comments.
  4. Soda bottles must be stationary on the “launching pad” prior to, during and after launch.
  5. This is a class effort. All class members are encouraged to participate.
  6. The winning class will be the class that produces the highest spray of soda.
  7. The winning class with receive not only bragging rights, but also a pizza party on class finals day.
  8. The contest will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, June 10th for day students and at 5:15pm on Tuesday, June 10th for evening students.

We look forward to a fun event at the end of this module. Stay tuned for pictures / stories of the winning teams!

P.S. Here is a video clip of the “internet phenomenon” that inspired the original Mythbusters episode:

Time Lapse Stills

If you have seen the time lapse video of our recent hangar resurfacing project, you might have been wondering what the entire project looked like before we compressed it.

To see the full, unedited videos (one video per day), check out

this page.

Each movie is approximately 2-5 minutes long and represents 2,200 - 7,800 individual pictures taken on that day. These are the “rough” movies from which we produced the final version (titles, music, credits, etc.). Although they are missing all of the polishing effects added to the final cut, they do have LOTS more detail and captured motion.

We hope you enjoy!
